Fall Updates, Hurricane Season, and Pumping Swells

Happy Autumn from Southern Edge Studios! With the official arrival of the season, we’re starting to feel the evening temperatures drop, and those warm summer afternoons are giving way to cooler evenings. This time of year is truly special, as the sunscapes at sunrise and sunset are more stunning than ever. I love swimming in the ocean with my Sony camera and Aquatech water housing during the fall, capturing the beautiful light reflections that grace North Florida through this season. Below, you can check out some of my favorite captures from the past week.

As we find ourselves deep in hurricane season, we’re incredibly thankful that Amelia Island has been spared from any major storms, unlike many other areas of Florida and the Eastern states. Our hearts go out to those who have faced turmoil from the recent storm that made landfall near where we used to live. A year and a half ago, we made the decision to move from Mayo, FL, to Fernandina Beach solely based on intuition and gut feelings, and since then, three significant storms have struck our former community, leaving destruction in their wake. In hindsight, we truly believe that God guided our decision, and we feel blessed by His grace. We are actively researching ways to support those affected by the latest storm and have discovered that World Central Kitchen is on the ground in Steinhatchee passing out meals for families in the community, accepting donations for those in need. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted.

Hurricane season brings periodic swells that gift Amelia Island with incredible waves. Depending on the storm's geographic location, we can experience either a long period of consistent waves or a quick burst of massive swell. Earlier in September, as summer came to a close, we enjoyed a couple weeks of steady surf that the local surf community eagerly embraced. Last week, as Hurricane Helene moved up the western coast of Florida and into Appalachia, Amelia Island was treated to a single day of exceptional surf. As the storm skirted past the island, the following morning greeted us with powerful, turbulent waves. Though the tides and winds eventually settled, the afternoon offered a fantastic session of surfing that brought the community together. I spent that day capturing those unforgettable moments through film and photography (see highlights below).

As you plan your end of year activities and start thinking about next year, just a reminder that we offer a diverse range of photography and videography services (including drone footage) for weddings, family and personal portraits, professional headshots, extreme sports photography, and any other moments you want to capture. You can also purchase stunning photographic art prints directly from our website; check out the new panoramic prints available. Finally, we’re excited to announce the release of our first 2025 Waves of Amelia Island Wall Calendar; grab yours today before they sell out!

Thank you for supporting your local photographic artist and have an amazing week!
